Saturday 2010 World Cup Betting: Ghana against US
The knockout round is here and the game between the United States and Ghana on Saturday was a really anticipated 1 at the usa sportsbook.
The United States team was finding themselves greatly supported by a suddenly pretty interested nation that usually doesn’t pay much attention to soccer. The US got a late goal from Landon Donovan to defeat Algeria in their earlier game in an outstanding performance that had many Americans glowing with pride. Ghana also guaranteed progression from Group D last week. The US was a slight fave in World Cup sports betting in this game, and several fanatics believed they would go all the way.
The United States was just three minutes away from not progressing from Group C when Landon Donovan landed in injury time. In reality, videos of the reactions of United States fanatics to Donovan’s last-minute goal circulated the Internet, eventually reaching Donovan himself and bringing him to tears. The 1-0 win gave the United States the leading spot in Group C so not only did the US defeat Algeria but they won Group C and avoided Germany in the round of 16. Ghana seemed as though a much easier game vs the United States, at least on paper. England ended second in Group C and they proceeded on to compete with Germany in the knockout round. Germany defeated the team in an embarrassing 4-1 final score, and the English team were removed at that point.
The u . s had played fairly well in the World Cup at that point with a victory and two draws. They have been having difficulties to score goals though and they’ve also had some bad fortune. They easily might have had at least three goals in the previous game vs Slovenia and two or three vs Algeria. Donovan has been strong in the World Cup and Clint Dempsey has created lots of chances. Also Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley have played well. The US have a great goalie in Tim Howard but defensively the US was permitting a few chances.
Ghana was coming off a 1-0 loss to Germany but Ghana still moved on due to the fact Australia upset Serbia in the other game. Ghana and Australia ended even on points but Ghana won the goal differential. Ghana is the only African team to make the knockout round so they had the backing of the fanatics on Saturday. They were surely reveling in being the last outstanding African squad at the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana has some ability but they have actually struggled to score goals. They have just two in their three World Cup games. Their goalie, Richard Kingson bailed them out time and again vs Germany.
Ghana was simply a team that the United States might – and most likely should – have been able to defeat on a normal basis. It’s not that Ghana is a terrible team. It’s that the United States is simply better. So when the US team was removed by Ghana with a final score of 2-1 on Saturday’s game, it was somewhat of a surprise, and almost certainly an emotional 1 to Americans.
Ghana will now be only the 3rd African team to make it this far by progressing on to the quarterfinals. On Friday they will be facing Uruguay.
